Map of Banff

The Banff Springs Hotel is just over a mile away from the Canadian Pacific train station in Banff. In between, the town of Banff has numerous tourist shops, restaurants, and outdoor centers. This map shows the town and surrounding environment.

Trail riding, bus tours, golf, swimming, fishing, boating, tennis, mountain climbing, photography, and dancing are just some of the activities the brochure invites guests to try. The brochure barely mentions the hot springs that first made Banff famous; by 1960, most tourists had better things to do than wallow in hot water.

Banff & Lake Louise Resort Hotels

In 1960, Canadian Pacific issued a series of eight-page, four-color booklets describing its major hotels. Though Banff Springs was probably CP’s largest hotel and Lake Louise was also very large, CP presented the two together in one booklet. This and other hotel booklets use a combination of color photos and graphics to illustrate the hotels and nearby recreation in both summer and winter.

Despite the rugged outdoors that surrounded the hotels, CP’s brochure makes it clear that guests were welcome, if not expected, to pack their best dress clothes as well as swimsuits, hiking gear, golf shoes, and other outdoor clothing. “Nightly dances at [both] Banff and Lake Louise,” says the booklet, “are featured in ideal settings for the ladies’ loveliest gowns.”

Chateau Frontenac in Old Québec

Built in 1893, the Chateau Frontenac pioneered the chateau-style of architecture that came to characterize so many of Canadian Pacific’s and Canadian National’s grand railway hotels. The original hotel in Québec City was designed by Bruce Price, who had also designed the original, wooden Banff Springs Hotel that CP later replaced with a stone-and-concrete structure by architect Walter Painter.

While Price is best known today for his wood, shingle style buildings, his Chateau Frontenac was a more conventional brick building made special by the dozens of rooftop towers and gables. Windsor Station, which Price also designed as both Montreal’s train station and Canadian Pacific’s headquarters, was built of limestone, showing that Price was equally adept at using many building materials.

Picture Yourself at Jasper

This 1960 brochure unfolds into the equivalent of 16 8×9-pages, most of which are dedicated to color photos of Jasper Lodge and the scenery around it. In line with the “picture yourself” theme, both the cover and the back of the brochure have an image of a young woman in a pink blouse and skirt taking a photograph. This image is taken from a photo on page 16 of CN’s 1958 Jasper booklet of this woman photographing a mountain lake.

This brochure is much smaller than the 1958 booklet and contains much less information about the various activities available to Jasper National Park tourists. Did CN give up on the booklet format, or did it just supplement booklets with this brochure? Probably the only way to answer this question is to find a 1960 booklet, presuming CN published one.

Gateway to an Empire

The Pacific Great Eastern Railway started construction in 1912 with the aim of connecting Vancouver with Prince George, a town on the Grand Trunk Pacific route to Prince Rupert. Along with the Grand Trunk Pacific, the PGE railway failed long before reaching Prince George. Though it was taken over by the British Columbia provincial government in 1919, it did not reach Prince George until 1952.

After that, things began to pick up, as described in this 16-page booklet: “Car loadings handled by the Pacific Great Eastern Railway soared from 12,482 in 1951 to more than 38,809 in 1957,” says the booklet, from which we can guess that the booklet was published in 1958. By this time, the railroad had acquired seven Budd RDCs and ran them between North Vancouver and Prince George as a train sometimes called the Caribou Prospector and sometimes the Caribou Dayliner.

Super Continental Menu

This menu is undated but shows the Super Continental in Canadian National’s pre-1961 paint scheme so must be from 1960 or a few years before. Jason Shron, of Rapido Trains, says that this paint scheme is the most popular one his company sells, but he much prefers the post-1961 scheme. While I agree that the 1954 color scheme was bland, I don’t find black-and-dirty-white with red-nosed locomotives to be much of an improvement over green-and-black with yellow-nosed locomotives, and the loss of the yellow pinstripes was a definite downgrade.

This menu has a couple of unusual features. First, the image of the train on the cover is actually a separate piece of stiff paper glued to the front, creating a primitive 3-D effect. Second, the table d’hôte half the interior menu is a separate piece of paper sized to fit into tabs cut into the main menu card. The space beneath this paper is blank so I didn’t bother including it in the PDF.

CN’s Canadian Rockies

This large brochure folds up so that an image of a beautiful wooden Indian bow appears behind the cover scene of a young couple overlooking the Athabasca River in Jasper National Park. This seems like a clever idea except for the fact that the bow has nothing to do with the rest of the brochure and can only serve to remind potential travelers of the Bow River and Banff Indian Days, both on rival Canadian Pacific.

In addition to ten color photos of the Rockies and Jasper Park, this brochure also has photos of Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Vancouver, and Victoria. With the possible exception of Victoria, none of these photos are particularly attractive or inviting; most are aerials and the Saskatoon and Edmonton photos could easily have been switched and few would have noticed the error.

Jasper in 1958

This 36-page booklet is extra-large: 11×8-1/2 inches as compared with the 6×9-inch format used in Canadian National’s 1940 Jasper booklet, though the latter’s 52 pages partly made up for the smaller size. Large color photos in this booklet make it clear that CN’s Jasper Park Lodge was very nice, but nowhere near as impressive as the Banff Springs Hotel or the Chateau Lake Louise.

Where CP built high-rise hotels in Banff and Lake Louise before high rises were common in many cities, CN was content to have a low-rise lodge in Jasper. The actual guest rooms were in separate cottages outside the main lodge, which held a lobby, dining hall, and recreation rooms.

Westward Across Canada

Here’s the companion piece to Canadian Pacific’s Eastward Across Canada. The eastward version is dated 1955 and has “highlights” about the railway from 1953. This one is undated but it has highlights from 1960, so it seems reasonable that this edition was published in 1962. Naturally, it has all the same photos and descriptions but in reverse order.

It is a bit ironic, and presumably unintentional, that the cover of the eastbound version showed an artist’s conception of the streamlined Canadian crossing the Rockies in a westbound direction. Appropriately enough, the cover of the westbound booklet features a Nicholas Morant photo of the Canadian crossing Stoney Creek Bridge in an eastbound direction.

Canadian Pacific All Services Map

During the 1950s and 1960s, the Canadian Pacific liked to call itself “the world’s most complete travel system” as it had trains, ships, trucks, and planes. One side of this brochure focuses on the trains, with Chesley Bonestell’s painting of the Canadian and large floor plans of each car on that train. But the map itself shows ocean liner routes to Europe and airplane routes to Asia and South America. In 1957, when this map was published, Canadian Pacific flew international routes with DC-4s that stopped in Hawai’i and Fiji on their way down under, Tokyo on the way to Hong Kong, and Mexico City on the way to Lima and Buenos Aires.

Canadian Pacific Airlines is a sad story of private enterprise quashed by government regulation and favoritism towards the government-owned airline, Trans-Canada Air, which changed its name to Air Canada in 1965. When Canadian Pacific started to buy small “bush” airlines serving northern Canada, the Canadian government tried to discourage it. When CP started to expand to become a national and international carrier, the government allowed it to fly only the less-profitable routes, reserving the most profitable European destinations for its own airline.
