Zion-Bryce-Grand Canyon–1939

Underscoring the importance of the southern Utah parks to Union Pacific, this is the only map-on-cover booklet with silver, rather than gold, printing on the cover. More important, unique among the map-on-cover booklets, this one has a full twenty true color photos–as opposed to only a dozen hand-colored photos in the embossed cover version–plus nearly 60 black-and-white photos. The colors in the photos are slightly more realistic than those in the hand-colored versions, but if anything they make the invitation to this region even more attractive to people wary of deceptive advertising.

One interesting area for study is the list of “Union Pacific Representatives” in the backs of these booklets. More than sixty cities are listed, many of them not on Union Pacific routes, including Atlanta, Boston, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dallas, Detroit, New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Tulsa, Winston-Salem, and Washington, DC. Others, including Chicago, Eugene, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Oakland, including Sacramento, and St. Louis, are on the routes of UP “connecting lines.” Of those that are on UP lines, a full nine are in the greater Los Angeles area.
