1937 Jasper Lodge Menu

Most of the previous Jasper Lodge menus we have seen have been cards, but this one is a folder. As the cover shows, the menu was used at conference of the Sun Life insurance company, so it may be that lodge management used folders for conferences and conventions and cards for ordinary people. The image on the front cover appears to be a colorized version of a black-and-white photo.

Sun Life must have been doing well despite the Depression. In 1933, it completed construction of a new, 26-story headquarters building that at the time had the most square feet of floor space of building in the British Empire.

This menu suggests the company was still doing well in 1935. Lobster is one of the appetizers. Entrées include salmon Hollandaise, rack of lamb, broiled sweetbreads, stuffed roast chicken, and beef ribs. Among the desserts are blueberry pie and Napoleon.

Like many of the trans-Atlantic steamship menus we’ve seen, this one came with a “chef’s suggestion” for each course, apparently for people who couldn’t make up their minds or who were confused by the menu format. This was printed on a separate card that was paper clipped into the menu. Someone removed the paper clip, which was wise as it was depositing rust on the menu, but then they taped the card in so it wouldn’t get lost, which was dumb because the tape can damage the menu.
