Helen Hruska carefully saved programmes for each day’s activities on the Greenoch-Montreal voyage, so I owe it to her to post them here. Most of them list music, films, dances, and games held each late afternoon and evening of the trip.

They also provide information about baggage, rail transport in Canada, and customs, as appropriate for each day.

For some reason, she saved only one entertainment programme listing the music played by the orchestra on the second night out. This included pieces by Strauss, Puccini, Coleridge-Taylor, Cursor, and Vilmos.

Helen Hruska was 33 when she went on this trip and her sister Vilma was 36. Neither were married so no doubt felt more comfortable traveling on a tour rather than making their own arrangements. Vilma never did marry but Helen eventually married Chester Waselewski of New Haven, Connecticut, though they never had children. Their two sisters and four brothers, however, had 19 children between them.

Helen’s husband died in 2003 in East Haven, Connecticut, after which Helen may have returned back to North Bergen. Vilma continued to live in North Bergen until she died in 2014 at the age of 96. Helen died a year later at the age of 94.

Before leaving Greenoch, a bagpiper played “Will Ye No Come Back Again,” a traditional lament. I have no idea whether Vilma or Helen went back again, but I hope they did.
