Gardner Canal Dinner Menu

The photo on the cover of this 1957 menu shows “the Prince George in the Gardner Canal.” According to Wikipedia, the Gardner Canal and adjacent Douglas Channel make up “one of the largest fjord-complexes in the world.” The Prince George didn’t have any ports of call on the canal and it was off the main travel route up the Inside Passage, so it apparently took this side trip just for the enjoyment of passengers. This side trip is shown on the map in the 1950 booklet about Alaska cruises.

The back of the menu has a nice photo of the green-and-yellow painted Super Continental passing through Jasper National Park. The menu itself, which was dated June 27, is a typical multi-course dinner served aboard CN’s Alaska steamships, featuring such options as baked Ketchikan spring salmon for the fish course, breaded calf’s sweetbreads or roast forequarter of spring lamb as two of the main entrées, and Coventry pastries as one of the desserts.
