Byron Harmon Scenic Postcards

Here are some examples of Byron Harmon’s photos showing sights around Banff. All of these are hand colored; black-and-white versions of all of them exist but I only have the color versions.

This view of Banff Avenue, with Cascade Mountain in the background, is postmarked July 10, 1948, or six years after Byron Harmon died. The cars in the photo are consistent with either right before or right after the war, but Harmon is supposed to have stopped taking photos in 1934. If so, this photo must have been taken by his son or someone else in his shop.

Here’s another view of Cascade Mountain “from administration bldg.,” meaning the national park headquarters. This and the other cards are not postmarked, but this one is based on a photo that was also in yesterday’s booklet, which is from around 1930.

The Canadian Pacific’s Banff Springs Hotel dominated the landscape around it. “Along the line of the Canadian Pacific Railway” is printed on the back of all of these cards along with Harmon’s name and the usual postal marks. This photo was also in yesterday’s booklet.

Although the colors are unrealistic, this is one of Byron Harmon’s most iconic photos. As well as being in yesterday’s booklet, Harmon’s granddaughter put it on the cover of one of the photo books she published.

Of course, a set of postcards including a photo of the Banff Springs Hotel would not be complete without another photo of the Chateau Lake Louis. This photo was not in yesterday’s booklet, which used a different view of the chateau.

Moraine Lake was a vigorous hike from Lake Louis. This photo was also in yesterday’s booklet. Harmon sold these cards in packs of 10 or 20; this group included two train postcards that I showed a couple of days ago and must have included at least one other card that is missing.

While Banff and Lake Louis are on the east side of the divide, Cathedral Peak and Yoho National Park are on the west side. This photo was in yesterday’s booklet, but the colors were very different (and probably less realistic than this postcard).
