The Comet

This brochure advertises the short-lived all-Pullman train that Northern Pacific operated from Minneapolis-St. Paul to Gardiner in the park season, which would have been June 16 to September 15 in the year the brochure was issued. The six-panel brochure includes a half a dozen photos of the train and several photos of Yellowstone including the Frank Haynes garbage-dump bear photo on the cover.

Wikipedia’s not-always-reliable list of named-passenger trains doesn’t include a Northern Pacific Comet, but it does list the Yellowstone Comet as a train that operated from 1926 to 1932. Northern Pacific’s June 1926 timetable has a full-page ad for the Comet with the same image as the cover of this brochure, but it is buried in the back of the timetable and doesn’t say that it is the inaugural year. It also says that the Comet would begin operating on June 18, not June 16 like the brochure says, so I’m pretty sure the brochure is from 1924 instead of 1926 or later.

The schedule in the brochure shows the train starting in the Twin Cities but the 1926 timetable shows the train starting in Chicago with a branch to Cody. Perhaps the name was changed from Comet to Yellowstone Comet when Burlington began operating the Chicago-Twin Cities and Billings-Cody segments. The equipment listed in the timetable includes an observation car, dining car, and Pullmans, plus an open-air observation car for the portion from Livingston to Gardiner.
