The Grandeur of Canyon and Mountain Peak

As I’ve previously noted, the White Pass Route issued several booklets in the 1930s featuring Alaska and the Yukon as viewed through the artistic eyes of John Segesman (1899-1985). Born in Spokane, Segesman studied art in Seattle and Chicago, worked briefly in Florida, then moved back to Washington state. His artworks include wildlife, Native Americans, and landscapes.

This is the third Segesman-illustrated booklet I’ve posted, and unfortunately none of them are dated. One has a very modern-looking painting on the cover, but it is the oldest of the three. Another is more like this one with a Native American woman in front of a vertically exaggerated mountain.

None of them are dated, and in fact all but one of the interior pages of the second booklet are identical to this one. The page that has some differences is one listing White Pass & Yukon officers and agents. All of them list H. Wheeler as president of the railroad, but some of the other officers and agents vary.

The booklet with the modernistic cover lists Hans Hamilton as vice president and C.J. Rogers as comptroller. Today’s booklet doesn’t list a vice president and C.J. Rogers is still comptroller. The other one promotes Rogers to vice president. Thus, I think we can conclude that they were published in this order. I suspect the modernistic one was published in 1932 and the other two were published within the next two to four years.

If you’ve never been on the White Pass Route, you should plan to go as soon as this pandemic is over. I first visited in 1981 and have been there many times since. My last visit was in 2019 when they were running steam excursions four times a week. Unfortunately, steam excursions were cancelled in 2020 and 2021.

After taking a steam excursion one day, I took a train to a stop called Glacier and hiked up to the trestle and tunnel where I took this photo. I planned to get some steam photos but unfortunately the steam excursion was cancelled that day. Nevertheless, it was a great trip.

  1. You appear to be correct in your guess of the timing.

Per my reply to yesterday’s post, today’s brochure must date to around 1937. The Official Railway Guides from that year are the only ones that match the combination of employees and positions listed here (Rogers still Comptroller, Barteau promoted to Vancouver, Fairborn in Mayo, and Benedict as Master Mechanic).

The ORG’s from May 1936 and September 1938 have slight variances in the above names and positions (as you noted, in reference to the other two brochures).

So the oldest brochure appears to date from 1930 to 33, this one from 1937, and the newest one from 1938 (or perhaps 39?).

  2. Sadly, not a single one of these gorgeous brochures has a railway timetable in them, which is a great disappointment. Some older WP&YR maps/brochures (as well as some CPR steamship brochures) did include timetables.
