Ahead of the Times

About two years ago, I presented a brochure advertising the 1938 Hiawatha. Here’s another brochure for the same train. The two are similar in many ways, but this one is older because it advertises only one train per day, while the previous brochure advertised the Morning and Afternoon Hiawathas.

The Milwaukee Road began running two Hiawathas a day between Chicago and the Twin Cities on January 21, 1939, so this brochure must date well before that. Though it repeatedly mentions 1939, it must actually have been printed in 1938.

The cover of this brochure shows both an older, 4-4-2 locomotive (lower left) built to pull the 1935 Hiawatha and a newer, 4-6-4 locomotive (upper right) built for the 1939 Hiawatha. The text says the newer locomotives “will be available for use on the 1939 Hiawatha whenever the increased length of the train requires their extra power.” The later brochure only shows the newer locomotives; apparently, the train was so popular that it always required “their extra power.” The later cover also replaces the “Ahead of the times” slogan on this one with “Beauty . . . Comfort . . . Silent Speed.”

Otherwise, the two brochures are pretty similar. The biggest difference is that, for no apparent reason, the top headline and text on the first panel of the front of the brochure was swapped with the top headline and text of the middle panel of the inside of the brochure.
