San Juan Dude Ranch

Here’s another menu I bought thinking I didn’t already have one when it turned out I did. Worse, like this one, the one I already had is a 1946 lunch menu. The good news is this one is a normal priced menu, while the previous one I showed is an unpriced menu from a convention tour, which I think is less interesting.

The menu for the convention group offered a choice of grilled fish, chicken fricasse, and cold lunch meats. The fish and cold lunch meats are also on today’s menu along with baked macaroni and diced ham, calf’s liver saute, and a creamed chicken sandwich. Diners could also choose from mountain trout, seven sandwiches, eggs and omelettes, salads, and various other items from the a la carte side.

The tour group was limited to jello, melon, or ice cream for dessert. Regular dining car patrons had a choice of ice cream, grape nut custard pudding, or Bartlett pears. I’m not sure either side had an advantage here.

The back of the menu encourages people to try a dude ranch in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. “For the hardier dudes, three and four-day pack trips are made into the San Juan Wilderness Area — a primitive region high in the Rockies accessible by no other means.”

That wilderness area still exists today, protected by the 1964 Wilderness Act (before then it was only under administrative protection that could have been revoked at any time). I’ve visited the San Juan Forest, but have never entered that wilderness. However, I suspect the menu is telling the truth when it says, “the scenic beauties of this virgin wilderness have made many a tenderfoot forget his saddle sores and go back to his workaday world with a new Nature-inspired zest for living.”
