This 1946 brochure introduces Louisville & Nashville’s Cincinnati-New Orleans all-coach streamliner. Built by American Car & Foundry with stainless steel trim, the train included a diner, tavern-lounge, and five coaches. Though it went about the same distance as Illinois Central’s City of New Orleans, it was much slower, requiring 19 hours (48.5 mph) compared with 16 hours (57.9 mph) on the City of New Orleans.

In fact, L&N painted the nose and stripes of its passenger locomotives yellow with an orange pinstripe separating the yellow from the blue. In the black-and-white photo the yellow and orange can easily appear to be the same color as the stainless steel sheaths used on the passenger cars.

Update: Streamliner Memories reader Jim Herron informs me that the locomotives were painted as shown in the brochure when the train was introduced, but later repainted in standard Louisville & Nashville colors, as shown in the photo linked to in the last paragraph. Thanks for this information.

  1. I feel that I should note that the 16 hour running time for the IC is from Louisville, not Cincinnati. Of course, the L&N makes the run between those two cities in 2 hours. So its Louisville-New Orleans time is 17 hours. Still slower, but more competitive.

  2. The blue and silver colors as shown are correct. The L&N E-7s were delivered in the blue and silver for service on the Hummingbird and Georgian. Note that there are no separation stripes between the dark and light colors which is also correct. It even shows that there is a patch of light gray at the top rear that was intended to help the diesel blend in with the cars.

    Also, the light color on other L&N passenger locomotives was considered to be creme, not yellow.
