Kodachrome Menus

The introduction of Kodachrome film in 1935 revolutionized railroad advertising, and some the results can be seen on Canadian Pacific menus. The oldest photo-based menus that I’ve found are from 1938. Today’s menus from the Chung collection start in 1939. Each of these menus happens to be in a different series.

The back cover of this 1939 breakfast menu for the Dominion repeats Canadian Pacific’s quaint habit of hyphenating the word “ski-ing.” It briefly describes skiing in the Canadian Rockies, on Lac Beauport near Chateau Frontenac, and in the Laurentians, plus briefly mentions several other ski locations accessible by Canadian Pacific trains. This menu has what I call the “art nouveauish” border above and below the photo, making it part of a series with at least four other menus.

This menu cover showing the Banff Springs Hotel and Bow River Valley was used on a 1949 “Westward Ho Football Special Canadian Rockies Tour.” Note that the photo is in the upper left of the menu but has a small border around the top and left side, a design used on at least 11 other menus. Also included in the PDF is a breakfast card from the same tour.

This image of a fisherman in the Bow River is on a 1949 lunch menu for the Dominion. In this case, there is no border around the top and left sides of the photo, a style I’ve seen on at least six other menus whose backgrounds may be yellow, magenta, cyan, or grey.

This menu was used at the Banff Springs Hotel in 1954. While CP’s typical dining car menus were about 6-1/2″ x 9-3/4″ in size, hotel menus such as this one were larger at 7-1/4″ x 10″. There is a white border all around the photo, a style I’ve seen on well over a dozen menus.

This menu features a painting of Canadian Pacific’s Empress of Britain — the third CP ship to bear that name — by Chesley Bonestell, the same artist who did the painting of the Canadian that was used on many menus. This breakfast menu was used on a dining car in 1957, the year after the Empress of Britain was launched. Reflecting declining demand for oceanliner service, this ship was considerably smaller than the pre-war Empress. This menu has a white border above the photo but not on the sides, a style I’ve seen on at least half a dozen other menus.
