Yesterday, I suggested that CN’s tall, narrow menus were used in its buffet cars. Although the menus didn’t say so, the fare they offered is distinctly second class. If that’s true, then this menu, which is undated, was probably used in the full dining cars at about the same time (meaning around 1966). The menu is larger, the meals are more elaborate, and the prices are much higher.

For example, the most expensive meal in yesterday’s menu was beef au jus with potato and broccoli for $2.75. Essentially the same thing — beef au jus, potatoes and peas — is $5.45 on this menu. This menu also gives diners a choice between a la carte (meaning with potatoes and vegetables but no other side dishes) and table d’hôte (presumably meaning with soup, dessert, and a beverage) for $1.45 more. If indeed this menu is from 1966, then multiply prices by six to approximate today’s U.S. dollars.
