Great Northern 1945 Calendar

Wades-in-the-Water, the person depicted in this painting, is listed in the Blackfeet geneology as “Wades in Water.” But there are actually two: Wades in Water is listed as having married Knife Scabbard and they had two children: Jimmy Wades in Water, born in 1886, and Julia Wades in Water, born in 1888. Considering the age of the person in the painting, it seems to depict the elder Wades in Water.

The problem with this notion is that the 1946 calendar depicts Julia Wades-in-the-Water, who is identified as the wife of Wades-in-the-Water. The resolution to this conundrum is to assume that Knife Scabbard was also known as Julia, and that she and her daughter had the same name.

The above 1938 photo of Wades in Water, identified as a “tribal sheriff,” is on the Montana State University web site. I’ve attempted to do some color correction in the above image. If Wades in Water fathered Jimmy Wades in Water in 1886, he was probably around 70 years old in 1938, while his son Jimmy would have been 52. Even given the harsh northern Montana climate, the person in the photo looks older than 52, so I conclude it is the father not the son.

The figures in the border seem to show some of the things that a sheriff might do: investigate crimes, enforce the law, arrest criminals, represent the tribe in political contexts, and retire to a nice home in the mountains. As with previous calendars, there is a railway map under the calendar pad.
