The calendar identifies the subject of this painting as “Sundance–Piegan Chief.” However, I can’t find anyone named Sundance in the Blackfeet genealogy database. In fact, very few of the names of people in the annual calendars are in the database, in some cases because they are too young — few in the database were born after 1910. That excuse probably doesn’t apply to Sundance. The calendars also seem to use ceremonial names that are different from the ones the Blackfeet used in day-to-day life.

Notice that the borders surrounding the painting and the calendar pad contain a simple geometric design. These designs became more elaborate in later years and were clearly specific to the person in the painting. The paper under the calendar pad has a map of the Great Northern similar to the one in the 1941 calendar, so I didn’t include it with the PDF.
