Union Pacific 1977 Calendar

For 1977 Union Pacific included five photos of its rail line (though UP trains appear in only four of them). The March photo shows a General Electric U50C locomotive, which was a six-axle version of the eight-axle U50. This locomotive was even less successful than the U50 and was taken off the roster even before it appeared in this calendar. The DD40 shown below was more successful, and more DD40s are shown in the September photo.

The other photos are the usual mixture of farms and mountains, though no coastal scenes this year. The most curious photo is November’s showing Tumwater Dam, which had been built by the Great Northern Railway to generate power for its electrified region through the Washington Cascades. This scene is hundreds of miles from the nearest UP tracks and it is strange to find it in the railroad’s calendar.
