This menu is for a tour co-sponsored by Ohio Farmer and New England Homestead magazines. The latter appears to be out of business but Ohio Farmer is still published by Farm Progress, which also publishes Prairie Farmer, a sponsor of many rail tours in the 1930s through 1950s. This particular tour was to Alaska and this menu covers the portion from St. Paul to Seattle, with three breakfasts, two dinners, and one lunch as the other lunches took place off the train.

The cover has an image of McDonald Peak in the Mission Range of Montana. Though not a photograph, it was printed separately and glued on to the menu itself. There is no indication of who the artist was and it was probably done in house.

The tour over Northern Pacific left St. Paul at 7:50 in the morning, took a four-hour side trip to Emigrant, Montana from Livingston, and concluded in Yakima, Washington. Passengers took a bus from Yakima over the Naches Highway through Mt. Rainier National Park to Seattle. Clearly, the tour didn’t use a scheduled train such as the North Coast Limited but instead chartered a train solely for the group.

The magazines didn’t scrimp on the food, offering a choice of four to seven entrĂ©es per meal with plenty of side dishes. Personally, I would have been disappointed to get so close to Yellowstone National Park and not actually enter the park. I suspect the magazines had previously offered tours to the park and wanted to go somewhere new in 1933.
