Columbian Lunch Menu

Baltimore & Ohio introduced “strata-domes” to the Columbian in 1949. Today we have two menus featuring a strata-dome on their covers. One is dated 1952 while the other is undated but must be from a little later considering some of the prices were higher.

The menus don’t say what meals they were for, but from the heavy emphasis on sandwiches, I’d say they were for lunch. For much of its life, the westbound Columbian was scheduled to depart Jersey City at noon and the eastbound train arrived at 1 pm, so there would have been time for lunch in either direction.

As full dining car menus, however, these would be considered skimpy if they were issued in the late 1960s, when passenger service was fading away. For the early 1950s they were positively pathetic. The 1952 menu offers four table d’hôte meals: fish, crab cakes, ham, and cold cuts; while the later menu has just three: fish, chicken, and steamed Frankforters (hot dogs as an entrée?). These came with whipped potatoes (instant?), spinach, rolls, and a beverage. The 1952 menu also had a special fried chicken dinner while the later menu’s special was just a hot roast beef sandwich.

The a lo carte side consisted of sandwiches, including ham, cheese, and lettuce & tomato — not on one sandwich but three different sandwiches. It also listed four salads, one of which was just “head lettuce.” Perhaps these items were fancier than indicated, but the menu does not make them sound very appetizing.

The Columbian was a coach-only train, and with the lunch period being right after departure or before arrival, perhaps the B&O asssumed that most of its patrons would prefer eating off the train to paying dining-car prices. Multiply prices by about 10 to get today’s dollars.
