Romance of the Rails

I didn’t start Streamliner Memories to sell books, but because I started Streamliner Memories, I ended up writing a book: Romance of the Rails, which will be released Wednesday, October 10. I’ve mostly kept the politics out of this web site, but I thought I should mention the book here for those whose interests further overlap my own.

The book goes deep into the history of rail transit and intercity passenger rail to find out why they worked so well a hundred years ago and why they don’t work today. If you love railroad history, you will love more than half of this book, as it provides details that you might not have learned in other railroad books. For example, did you know that positive train control was invented by the same man who invented the first workable electric streetcar, the first electric rapid transit trains, and the first high-speed electric elevators?

If you believe that the federal government owes it to rail fans to subsidize light rail, Amtrak, and high-speed trains, then you might not like the rest of the book. After a careful look at the data, the book concludes that passenger rail no longer makes sense in America. In fact, it doesn’t even work well in Europe. This was a difficult conclusion for me to reach because I obviously love passenger trains a great deal.

On October 10, starting at 11:30 am Eastern Time, I will present the book at a forum in Washington DC. Since I know my conclusions are controversial, I’ve invited Art Guzzetti of the American Public Transportation Association, Jim Mathews of the Railroad Passengers Association, and Marc Scribner of the Competitive Enterprise Institute, to each give their responses to the book. If you are interested but can’t be in Washington, you can watch it live at the above link.

If you would like to buy the book, you can order it from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or your local bookstore. Although Amazon claims the book won’t be available until October 26, they are actually available from the publisher now. Email me if you have trouble finding one.
