Scenic Views Along the Coast & Valley Routes

After discarding all of the photographs that are duplicates of ones in other sets in this series, this packet has even fewer unique photos than the Overland Route folio. Just two photos, one of Hollywood Boulevard and one of “the world’s largest motion picture studio,” aren’t found in any of the other photo sets. My guess is the movie studio is Warner Brothers, but it could also be Fox, MGM, or Paramount.

As with the other sets by National Color Press, the colors in this one are far from natural. Hills by Santa Barbara look like terraces at Yellowstone’s Mammoth Hot Springs. Coit Tower is yellow. As shown below, even the colors of SP trains were off. This might be understandable if the artist had never actually seen the scenes in the photos, but National Color was in San Francisco, so the artist had to have seen many of them every day.
