These Denver Zephyr menus are special for reasons other than the fine art on their covers. First, they are extra large, nearly 9″ by 12″, which is especially unusual as they were used near the end of the private passenger train era. Second, the words “Aboard the Denver Zephyr” are embossed on the covers, which you can barely see by looking at shadows on page 2 of the menu.

The menu headings — “A La Carte,” “Select Dinner Menu,” and “Supper Selections” — are printed in a typeface called Coronet, which was designed in 1937 and made popular by the I Love Lucy show’s opening credits. Both Burlington and Union Pacific began using this typeface on their menus shortly after the war and before I Love Lucy began broadcasting.
