Coloring Book of the Union Pacific West

This coloring book has twice as many pages as yesterday’s, and only has logos for the Union Pacific, not the Southern Pacific or Chicago & North Western. The Columbia River Gorge, Sun Valley, the Kaibab squirrel, Bryce, Zion, and the Grand Canyon are some of the scenes pictured in this book that weren’t in the Overland Route coloring book.

This book also features photos of two locomotives: F3 number 1426 and Alco FA number 1501. Number 1426 was built in 1948, while number 1501 was built in 1947 but renumbered as 1601 in 1948. So my guess is this booklet was published in 1948. It is possible that both this and the Overland booklets were published in the same year, but since the latter has a photo of an older locomotive, I suspect it came out first.

Many of the photos in this booklet also appear in other Union Pacific literature. The photo of Zion, for example, is also on a menu and a booklet cover and shows a young woman wearing a yellow sweater in the foreground. But the photo in the coloring book is cropped differently and reveals a young man sitting behind her. Apparently, for most purposes, UP marketers didn’t think that he made the photo more attractive.
