The somewhat ghost-like cover is appropriate, as this was the 80th and last annual report of the Great Northern Railway. Although the Burlington Northern merger did not officially take place until March 2, 1970, the merged railroad put out a joint annual report for 1969, a copy of which can be downloaded from the Northern Pacific Railway Historical Association web site.

Passenger train revenues declined again in 1968, and losses based on “expenses solely related to passenger service” grew from $6.6 million in 1967 to $8.1 million in 1968. Since overall passenger revenues were just $8.8 million, the GN lost nearly a dollar for every dollar earned from passenger fares.
