Introduced in 1930 as Burlington’s premiere train in the hotly competitive Chicago-Denver market, the Aristocrat lasted barely more than a decade. While the Aristocrat required 26 hours to go from Chicago to Denver, the Denver Zephyr, which began operating in 1936, took as little as 16.

The Blackhawk

In January, 1930, the Burlington added three new luxury trains to its schedules: the Chicago-Lincoln Ak-Sar-Ben, the Chicago-Denver Aristocrat, and the Chicago-Twin Cities Blackhawk. The timing was obviously poor: the trains had been ordered before the stock market crash and were delivered less than two months after the crash. But one of the trains, the Blackhawk, remained on the timetable until 1970.

Named for an Indian chief who sided with the British during the War of 1812 (and who probably didn’t look anything like the image on this letterhead), the Blackhawk was an overnight train. When the Twin Zephyrs covered the same route in just six daylight hours, the Blackhawk remained on the schedule to provide service to people who didn’t want to spend any business hours on the train.

The C&NW/UP Department of Tours offered 15 different tours in 1941. (Update: I originally listed this for the 1942 season, but it is for 1941.) These included a 7-day tour to Colorado, 7-, 8-, and 9-day tours to Yellowstone, 10- and 11-day tours to Yellowstone and Colorado, a 14-day tour to Yellowstone and Southern Utah; 8- and 11-day tours to Southern Utah, 13- and 14-day tours to California, a 20-day Southern Utah/California tour, a 13-day Pacific Northwest tour, and a 19-day PNW-Alaska tour.

This is one of the longest Summer Tours booklets yet, with 25 color and numerous black-and-white photos on 68 pages. Tour prices range from $95 for the 7-day Colorado tour to $315 for the 19-day Alaska-PNW tour (multiply by about 11 to get today’s dollars). The 7-day Colorado tour only offered a $12 discount for people willing to travel in air-conditioned coaches rather than sleeping cars. Apparently, the Department of Tours didn’t imagine that people able to afford the longer tours would be willing to travel coach as that option wasn’t available for other tours.

Despite the Depression, by 1932 the C&NW/UP Department of Tours was offering nine escorted tours that could last anywhere from nine to twenty-four days including travel time from and to Chicago. The booklet describing these tours includes more than twenty color photos, many of which also appear in the other booklets.

Summer Tours–1927 Season
