Call of the Mountains is an early Great Northern entry into the escorted tour book genre. Its 40 pages include lengthy statements by two famous writers, six beautiful color paintings and a color centerfold relief map, and numerous black-and-white photos accompanying a thorough description of the park and a brief description of tours people could take.

The booklet is introduced by Mary Roberts Rinehart, then a famous American mystery writer who wrote the first “butler did it” story and a play called The Bat that inspired Bob Kane’s Batman. Empire Builder

This elegant brochure has no date, but I suspect it was from 1929, when the Empire Builder began operating, or 1930, before the effects of the Depression were fully felt. The interior devotes six pages to the train’s observation-lounge car, two pages to sleeping accommodations, four pages to the diner, and two pages to the train’s route by Glacier Park and through the Cascades. In short, unlike Depression-era brochures, this one stresses luxury over economy.

The New Oriental Limited

Great Northern issued this undated brochure after re-equipping the Oriental Limited in 1924. But the brochure mentions that “a tunnel seven and eight-tenths miles long is being bored through the Cascade Mountains at a cost of $16,000,000.” Since GN made the final decision to build this tunnel in 1925, the brochure is from that year or possibly a year or two later.

For one thing, I’ve seen similar numbers on blotters that are obviously old and used. Great Northern Envelope

An ordinary number 10 business envelope, but the addition of the Great Northern logo in the upper left corner makes it railroad memorabilia. The logo dates it to between 1967 and 1970, and the lack of any tiny numbers suggests that, unlike some office stationery, it is authentic.

I remember being excited when Great Northern announced it was repainting its railway Big Sky Blue. But, in retrospect, I have to agree with Charles Wood that it was a step backwards from orange-and-green.
