This hand-colored postcard claims to show the eastbound Oriental Limited ascending west towards the Great Northern’s old Cascade Tunnel. To reach the tunnel, which opened in 1900, the old line made a 180-degree turn at Scenic (the site of a hotel and hot springs), traveled west for several miles, then made another 180-degree turn in the Horse Shoe Tunnel near Martin Creek.

One problem with this picture is that the Oriental Limited was scheduled to leave Seattle in the evening, so it would have been dark by the time it reached this point. It is more likely that this is train number 4, the Fast Mail, which left Seattle in the morning and reached Scenic in early afternoon.

Burlington 1970 Timetable

Burlington’s last timetable before the Burlington Northern merger in March, 1970, showed a sad remnant of the railroad’s past passenger train glory. What had been a 24-page timetable barely three years before was now down to the equivalent of just six pages, unfolding into a 24″x9″ sheet.

Just four timetables are included: Chicago-Lincoln-Denver, Chicago-Twin Cities, Chicago-Kansas City, and Chicago-Omaha. The Chicago-Denver schedule shows the Denver Zephyr and the California Zephyr, the Western Pacific leg of which would be cancelled just three weeks after the BN merger. The Ak-Sar-Ben, trains 3 & 4, continued to go between Chicago and Lincoln while trains 11 and 12, which earlier timetables had called the Nebraska Zephyr, went only as far as Omaha.

The Burlington timetable that had been 36 pages in 1948 was down to 24 pages in 1966. The major trains and routes were still there, but some secondary trains and most branch line trains were gone.

These tours were dramatically stripped down from the Burlington Escorted Tours offered in the 1930s through early 1950s.

Colorado Land Cruises

For 1964, instead of relying on tour buses to Rocky Mountain Park and other Colorado destinations, Burlington offered people a Hertz rental car for a week. This 16-page brochure has two Bruce Bomberger paintings on the cover plus 19 color and seven black-and-white photos inside. Both the paintings and many of the photos are familiar from other advertising.
