The Super Chief welcome-aboard brochures had one less panel than the brochures for Santa Fe’s other streamlined trains. Apparently, the railway didn’t think that sleeping car passengers needed as much instruction about how their rooms worked as coach passengers needed for their chairs.

We’ve previously seen the 1964 edition of this brochure. Above is one from Spring, 1963 while below is one from February, 1968. We’ve previously seen a 1957 version of this brochure. Containing a timetable for the train, the brochure was apparently reissued with each new timetable, even though the timetable itself didn’t always changed.

The La Fonda in Old Santa Fe

The La Fonda Hotel was built in Santa Fe in 1920, but didn’t become really successful until the Santa Fe Railway purchased it in 1925. The hotel was designed by Isaac Rapp, who is sometimes called “the creator of the Santa Fe style. But the railway hired Mary Colter to decorate the interior, and she as much as Rapp helped create that style. While Rapp modeled the exterior on pueblo structures (though with contemporary building materials beneath the faux-adobe surface), it was Colter who decided to feature exposed beams (locally known as visa) in the interior and to combine Hispanic and Native American designs throughout the hotel.

Of course, the railway commissioned Fred Harvey to operate the hotel. This 1963 brochure came out near the end of Fred Harvey’s operation. Indeed, the brochure’s list of “other Fred Harvey Houses in the Southwest” includes just four, with two others blacked out. Still, La Fonda was maintained as a first-class operation, and still is today. The Harvey family and Santa Fe sold the hotel to a local family in 1968.

This is an update to the 1945 educational publication shown here a few days ago. Santa Fe presumably updated this every few years, though probably not every year. Though it follows the same general outline as the 1945 edition, it has been almost completely rewritten.

This lunch menu was printed for the Texas Chief in 1961 and is a companion to the Kachina doll and Arrow Maker menus. All three cover paintings by Eanger Irving Couse show a Native American man doing very different things in almost exactly the same pose.

Couse was considered a fine artist of the Taos school, but like many fine artists he often did similar paintings of popular subjects for the collectors’ market. For example, a quick search of the web turns up a half a dozen different blanket weaver paintings, in all of which the weaver is crouching or sitting with, in most cases, a large pot behind him. To add to the sentimentality and thus the marketability of the painting, two of them have children.
