We’ve already seen a low-resolution version of this booklet from the University of Arizona library, but I’ve since acquired one of my own and so can provide a higher-resolution PDF. Despite the phrase “Indian detour” in the right-hand title, this one mainly advertises Santa Fe’s intercity bus service, not New Mexico and Arizona guided tours described in the booklets of the last few days.

Indian Detours 1940

Unlike the the 1930 and 1931 Indian Detour booklets shown here, this one says nothing about the company that actually operated the tours. Instead, the focus is on the destinations including Santa Fe’s La Fonda Hotel, which was still run by Fred Harvey and was the starting point for many of the tours.

After Santa Fe streamlined its premiere trains, the Grand Canyon Limited remained a heavyweight and clearly had a secondary status. But, as this menu illustrates, it was a top-notch operation in 1930. In fact, the train was barely more than a year old when this menu was published, as it began service on June 29, 1929. The dates stamped on this particular menu were probably applied by the railway or the Fred Harvey company and suggest that this was a file copy.

Santa Fe By the Way

We’ve previously seen a 1945 “Along Your Way” booklet. This “by the way” booklet is from 1928. The 1928 version is 36 pages (including covers) printed entirely in blue. The 1945 edition is eight pages longer with the inside and outside covers printed in color and the rest in black-and-white.

More than any other national park, Grand Canyon was the creation of the railroad that served it. While Northern Pacific lobbied Congress to create Yellowstone National Park and Great Northern lobbied to create Glacier Park, neither railway invested any money inside those parks until after they were so designated by Congress. The artist is William Robinson Leigh, who was known as the “Sagebrush Rembrandt.” The Santa Fe paid his way to the Grand Canyon in 1906 and then bought five of his paintings that it hung in El Tovar and other Grand Canyon lodges. This painting is dated 1909 so must be from Leigh’s second trip to the canyon, which was also sponsored by the railroad.

Titan of Chasms

This booklet consists of three essays plus information about getting to and enjoying the Grand Canyon. The first essay was by Charles A. Higgins, who until his untimely death in 1900 was in charge of Santa Fe advertising. He had personally hiked all of the trails and escorted artists, scientists, and others through the Grand Canyon. In 1892, he wrote an essay, “Grand Cañon of the Colorado River,” which the Santa Fe published with drawings by Thomas Moran and other artists.

In 1902, the Santa Fe published an abridged version of that essay, titled “Titan of Chasms,” with the two other essays included here. This was reprinted for eight or nine years; this one is dated 1909.
