Under Sapphire Skies

Rock Island advertising claimed Colorado skies were turquoise, which doesn’t seem right to me. A bit more realistic is Missouri Pacific’s claim that San Antonio skies are sapphire blue. However, the interior pages are printed in sepia tones with a yellowish-brown trip, and even the color cover shows the sky to be a pale aqua color, so potential visitors to San Antonio had to rely on their imaginations to see sapphire skies.

The booklet contains photos of many San Antonio landmarks, including the Alamo, Brackenridge Park, and Mission San Jose. It also shows the Missouri Pacific depot, which looks much larger and more elaborate than the Southern Pacific depot that is currently used by Amtrak. The MP depot still exists in a restored condition and is apparently used as a bank. Continue reading

Rio Grande Ticket Envelope

The Rio Grande Prospector and Royal Gorge both ended service in 1967, leaving only three trains still operated by the railroad: the California Zephyr, the Silverton, and the Ski Train. The first two trains are the only trains mentioned on this ticket envelope, suggesting that it was printed after 1967 but no later than 1970, when Western Pacific ended its portion of the California Zephyr.

The Yampa Valley

As its name suggests, the Denver & Salt Lake was trying to build from Denver to Salt Lake City, but only made it as far as Craig, Colorado. The dream of a Denver-Salt Lake route was realized when the Denver & Rio Grande Western built the Dotsero cutoff, and later acquired the D&SL. That left the line to Craig orphaned, but until 1967 the D&RGW continued to provide passenger service on that branch.

1950 California Zephyr

We’ve previously seen a 1957 version of this booklet. This one has 12 pages while the 1957 edition had 16. Pretty much all of the pages in this one, except the cover, are also in the 1957 edition, with slight changes to the text.

The big difference is the cover. Both have illustrations by Bruce Bomberger, who also did advertisements for Chevrolet, Levi’s, and a wide variety of other companies via his employer, Patterson & Hall (whose web site today includes California Zephyr ads under Southern Pacific). The full-page illustration on the 1950 booklet is more striking than the two half-page illustrations on the 1957 version, but considering that the booklet might be folded in half for display purposes, the half-page pictures might have made more sense.

1941 Exposition Flyer

The Golden Gate Exposition ended in 1940, but the Burlington-Rio Grande-Western Pacific train named after it was so successful that the railroads kept it going. This attractive train booklet creatively uses just three colors of ink–blue, orange, and black–on most pages. The front cover is the only page that shows anything in green, and I suspect they somehow mixed the orange and blue to get that shade.

Although this booklet doesn’t have a timetable, sightseers would have found this train to be an improvement over its predecessor, the Scenic Limited. While that train went through the Feather River Canyon at least partly in darkness in both directions, the Exposition Flyer was scheduled to go through both the Rockies and the Sierras in daylight westbound, though partly or mostly in darkness eastbound.

1941 Panoramic Views

This is an update to an undated version of Panoramic Views shown here previously. The map on that one shows the Dotsero Cutoff and Uintah Railway, placing it in the 1934-1939 time period. The Uintah Railway, which stopped operating in 1939, doesn’t appear on the map on this edition, which is firmly dated by a 1941 mark in the lower righthand corner.

The two editions share seven photos, but this one has six photos not found in the earlier version, including Arches National Park (then a monument), Glenwood Springs, and Pikes Peak. The covers are also completely different; personally, I find the illustrations of the Moffat Tunnel and Royal Gorge on the older brochure, as small as they are, to be a lot more attractive than the sedentary passengers watching a somewhat imaginary scene pictured on the cover of this one.

Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad

This is a peculiar booklet. The ten interior pages each contain an interior photo of a Rio Grande passenger train, accompanied by an average of just 15 words per photo. While there is a system map on the back cover, none of the interior pages mention specific trains, routes, destinations, or the scenery visible from Rio Grande trains.

The cover photo showing a 1929 locomotive pulling a passenger train appears to have been “photoshopped” as the train would otherwise be emerging from the solid wall of a canyon. While the booklet is undated, it must be from the late 1930s, as the map on the back cover shows the Dotsero Cutoff (opened in 1934) and the Uintah Railway (closed in 1939).

The Royal Gorge in the Royal Gorge

All of the photos in today’s postcards are taken from nearly the same spot of different eras of passenger trains in Colorado’s Royal Gorge. The first shows a moonlit-train passing through the gorge with no sign of a suspension bridge above. Since the bridge was built in 1929, the postcard must be from before that date. The moonlight view should have given passengers a hint that their train would pass through this awesome scenery at night.

The next shows a passenger train pulled by a locomotive that appears to be only a little newer than the one in the moonlit scene. In fact, it is probably one of the Rio Grande’s 4-8-4 Northerns (which the Rio Grande apparently called “Westerns”), which were built in 1928. Though the photo and postcard are clearly from the pre-war era, the card is postmarked 1949.

Rio Grande Postcards

Here are some postcards either issued by or showing scenes along the Rio Grande Railroad. The first one, which shows Colorado Springs’ Garden of the Gods as viewed from the visitor center, is marked “D&RG Ry.” The lack of a “W” dates it to before 1920. The postcard itself is of the “early divided back era” which dates it to before 1915.

Click image to download a 399-KB PDF of this postcard.

The next card was also issued in the “D&RG” era, but the white border indicates it is from the late 1910s. The Denver & Rio Grande Western resulted from the 1920 merger of the Denver & Rio Grande and the Rio Grande Western, but even before the merger the two had close ties as indicated by the fact that th scene in this D&RG postcard, Soldier Summit, was actually on the RGW. If I were the railroad, I’m not sure I’d brag that my line was so steep that five locomotives were required to haul a passenger train over the summit.

Western Pacific 1929 Timetable

In 1929, Western Pacific–which was built by Jay Gould’s son, George Gould, as the western link in his Missouri Pacific-Rio Grande-Western Pacific transcontinental route–was no longer financially connected with the Rio Grande or Missouri Pacific, but it was still dependent upon them for much of its business. This timetable shows that WP operated two trains a day between the San Francisco Bay Area and Salt Lake City, the Scenic Limited and Pacific Express. Both continued to St. Louis on the Rio Grande and MP, while some cars from the Scenic Limited went to Chicago on the Burlington Route.

Click image to download a 13.8-MB PDF of this 20-page timetable.

Western Pacific heavily advertised its scenic route through the Feather River Canyon. But unlike the later California Zephyr, WP’s 1929 trains were not timed to see all of the canyon. The trip through the canyon on the eastbound Scenic Limited would be entirely in daylight only near the summer solstice, while the westbound train went through the canyon entirely in darkness. Early risers on the eastbound Pacific Express would see only part of the canyon in daylight, while westbound passengers would see less than half even at the summer solstice and almost none in winter.
