Route of the Rio Grande

Dated 1926, this handsome little booklet contains 15 pages (about 4,500 words) of text praising Colorado scenery by the then-well-known “cowboy poet,” Arthur Chapman. I put cowboy poet in quotation marks because Chapman wasn’t a cowboy; he was a newspaper writer who wrote poems about cowboys. In any case, the booklet also reprints Chapman’s most famous poem, Out Where the West Begins.

The text is accompanied by ten large photos that do an excellent job of conveying the beauty and grandeur of Rio Grande country despite the fact that they are printed with just two colors: black and a reddish brown. Unfortunately, my copy of this booklet appears to be missing the last page. Judging from other booklets of similar vintage, that page probably gave the names and addresses of Rio Grande travel agents.

The Ski Train

The Rio Grande ran a special train on winter weekends from Denver to Winter Park, Colorado. The train stopped in Winter Park just 100 feet away from a ski lift. At one time, the train used former Northern Pacific heavyweight coaches, but by the time this brochure came out, the railroad had purchased former Canadian National cars for the train. Sadly, the train stopped running in 2009.

There’s no date on the brochure, but it says “50 years of tradition.” Since the train began service in 1940, the brochure must be from 1990. Strangely, all of the women in the interior photos have nearly identical frizzy hair styles more appropriate to the 1960s and 1970s than to 1990, but there’s no accounting for taste.

Mesa Verde National Park

The heart of this booklet is a lengthy essay by Joseph Emerson Smith, a Colorado newspaper writer and editor who lived from about 1877 to 1955. The 20-page booklet also includes eight hand-colored photographs and numerous other illustrations.

The booklet is undated, but the map in the back shows the Dotsero Cutoff as a dotted line, suggesting it was under construction, and the Moffat Tunnel Route is marked “D&SL” for Denver & Salt Lake. The Dotsero Cutoff was planned in 1931 and completed in 1934, so the booklet probably dates from sometime around 1931 to 1933.

1916 Panoramic Views

We’ve seen an edition of this brochure from the late 1930s and one from about 1950. Here’s a version from around 1916 that features not only the Rio Grande but Western Pacific’s Feather River route. The brochure’s map is dated “4-20-’16,” which doesn’t definitively prove the brochure was issued that year. However, it wasn’t much later than that, as the Denver & Rio Grande (which financed construction of the Western Pacific) lost control of WP in 1918, and after 1920 it called itself the Denver & Rio Grande Western.

Fittingly, this brochure is a little longer than the later ones that only cover the Rio Grande: 14 panels wide instead of 12. The nine hand-colored pictures on the back (five of which are two panels wide) are gorgeous. While Western Pacific has a presence, the bias is clearly to the Rio Grande: five panels of text and five photos for the Rio Grande compared with two panels and three photos for WP (plus one panel and one photo at the meeting point, Salt Lake City).

Denver and Salt Lake

The centerfold of this booklet has a beautiful color illustration of the Moffat Road’s route over Rollins Pass with an arrow pointing to the future location of the Moffat Tunnel–a tunnel that would not open for another 13 years. The illustration makes it appear that the railroad circled around the mountain in the center three times, when in fact, as this map shows, the route heads up from left to right, then loops and heads up from right to left, then loops again and heads up from left to right.

Some of the black-and-white photos in this booklet, such as the Flatirons above Boulder, will be recognized by anyone familiar with the California Zephyr route. But other photos, such as Yankee Doodle Lake, will be familiar only to those who have driven the Rollins Pass Road that follows the route of the D&SL. Because the D&SL merged into the D&RGW in the 1930s (and because there are already so many railroads/trains in my category list), I’ve listed this as a Rio Grande document.

Here’s a different version of yesterday’s Cripple Creek Short Line brochure. Neither have a printing date, but I can discern the numerals “1/06” on one of the maps on this brochure. The very same map is used on yesterday’s edition but in a smaller, color version, so it’s hard to tell which might have been printed first.

Of the dozen color photos on today’s brochure, only three seem to also be in color on yesterday’s, though as noted one of yesterdays’ color images is in today’s brochure in black-and-white.

The Cripple Creek Trip

In 1890, a prospector named Bob Womack discovered gold near Cripple Creek, Colorado, and eventually the Cripple Creek mining district produced more than 650 tons of gold worth close to $20 billion at today’s prices. Located about halfway between the Colorado Midland Railway on the north and the Denver and Rio Grande on the south, the district was served by lines branching from both railroads: the Midland Terminal from the Colorado Midland and the Florence and Cripple Creek from the Rio Grande. However, by 1900 both railroads were controlled by the same company, the Cripple Creek Central Railway, so shipping prices were high.

To break the monopoly, local investors built the Colorado Springs and Cripple Creek District Railroad, which opened in 1901. Its 46 miles was the shortest of the three routes from the mines to the smelters outside of Colorado Springs, so it called itself the Short Line. While it succeeded in reducing prices, it failed to make money, and by 1915 the Cripple Creek Central had taken it over. Though it was the shortest route, it was not necessarily the easiest, and it was scrapped by 1920.

Burlington Tours in 1969

Items from near the end of the Silver Age often betray a feeling of “How the mighty have fallen!” That’s especially true for this 44-page booklet advertising Burlington (and GN and NP) tours for 1969. Despite the Depression, Burlington Escorted Tour booklets from the 1930s were beautifully designed, and sometimes arguably overdesigned. This one, however, looks like it was put together by high school students advertising a yard sale. Instead of using a graphics artist, typesetter, and offset printer, the designer of this booklet cut up and rearranged previous ads with a pair of scissors and glue, supplemented them with IBM Selectric type, and printed the results on 11″x17″ paper on what was no doubt a Xerox-brand photocopier (because that was the brand leading corporations used in those days).

For someone used to a manual typewriter and mimeograph copiers, these were sophisticated tools in 1969. The ability to change fonts on the Selectric, for example, allowed the creator of this booklet to type in both Roman (using a Letter Gothic ball) and italic (using a Light Italic ball). Large letters not found from previous ads were laid down using Letraset or some similar dry-transfer process.

The Railroad with Young Ideas

This booklet was passed out during “educational tours” for students who (judging from the photos) were in what we would today call middle school or junior high school. It describes the Burlington’s freight operations as well as passenger trains in both words and plenty of pictures.

Though undated, the booklet mentions the “Great Dome Empire Builder,” which added domes in 1955, but doesn’t mention vista-domes in connection with the Denver Zephyr, which added domes in 1956. Thus, it must have been printed in 1955.

1948 Lunch Menu

This menu has a date but doesn’t say what train used it. The steam locomotive on the cover suggests that it wasn’t a zephyr. Tiny print on this menu reads, “12/47,” which I presume is the date it was printed, followed by a string of mostly two-digit numbers: “32-33, 31, 20, 27, TZ-21,” which I presume are the trains that might have used it. Train 21 was the northbound morning Twin Zephyr, so perhaps a menu like this was used on a zephyr.

CLick image to download a 1.3-MB PDF of this menu.

However, someone who presumably kept the menu as a souvenir has handwritten in it, “Friday, February 28, 48,” and “Ate lunch between Guernsey and Wendover.” In 1948, the only train between Guernsey and Wendover was train 31, which began in Alliance, Nebraska and went to Casper, Wyoming via Northport, Nebraska, which seems a circuitous route (241 miles vs. 218 by the shortest highway route today). The train left Guernsey at 11:10 am and passed through Wendover at 11:30 am, which is about the right time for an early lunch. Train 31, and its eastbound counterpart 32, didn’t have a name or even an equipment list in the timetable, but must have had a diner.
