CN lost about half its passenger trains from the 1963 timetable to 1971. The 1971 edition is just 24 pages long (plus covers), down from 64 in 1963, and contains about 51 table, down from 98. The system map, now back in the centerfold, has been vastly simplified to show only routes on which CN ran passenger trains or linked to bus or ferry services.

Gone are trains from Montreal to New York, Detroit, and other U.S. cities (probably because Amtrak cut them). Yesterday I ranted about the poorly chosen photo on the cover of Canadian National’s summer 1963 timetable. This one is even worse, as it advertises a fare plan, not the trains. CN Summer 1963 Timetable

After publishing an 80-page (plus covers) timetable for many years, CN shrank the booklet by 16 pages starting with the April, 1961 edition. I count 123 separate tables in the 1960 edition but only 98 tables in this one. About two dozen trains were discontinued between the two editions, most of them very minor; some ran only one or two days a week.

The biggest loss was the Toronto-New York Maple Leaf, which operated over CN to the border and Lehigh Valley to New York Penn Station. Lehigh Valley discontinued this train in February, 1961. Another interesting loss was a commuter train service between Montreal and St. Eustache, a 17-mile route that supported something like 19 trains per weekday in 1960 and just one in 1963.

This is the last of the menus I have from National Railway Historical Society trips on the CN. This trip from Fort Erie to Toronto and return took place on May 20, 1962. It’s hard to tell from the PDFs, but this menu is much larger than the other ones: 9″x12″ vs. 6-3/4″x10″. The menu doesn’t say it is for dinner, but it is almost identical to the dinner menus I presented a few days ago: fish (in this case, goldeneye), chicken pie, or prime rib for $3.25 or sirloin steak for $4.50.

While most western railroads had tour booklets that described tours starting from one city, usually Chicago, Canadian National went to the trouble of having separate tour booklets for tours starting in at least four different cities.
