Breakfast on the Los Angeles Limited on January 6, 1951, featured this menu showing the University of Nebraska’s ivy-covered administration building. Like menus from the previous two days, this one is imprinted for members of the Wolverine Club returning home after the 1951 Rose Bowl.

Members of the Wolverine Club enjoyed dinner on the Los Angeles Limited using this menu on January 5, 1951. The sandstone building on the cover was the University of Wyoming’s Liberal Arts Building, now the Arts and Sciences Building, and was designed by Wyoming architect William DuBois and constructed in 1936. The university had 3,500 students in 1951, since increased to 14,000.

The menu offers sea bass, pork chops, or roast turkey on the table d’hôte side plus “available fresh fish,” lamb chops, fried chicken, corned beef hash, and sirloin steak on the a la carte side. It’s hard to imagine today that the academically inclined University of California at Berkeley was once a football powerhouse, having rostered undefeated teams from 1920 through 1924 and appearing in three consecutive Rose Bowls from 1949 through 1951. Despite having lost the 1949 and 1950 Rose Bowls, Cal was favored to win the 1951 game as it had enjoyed an undefeated season (nine wins and one tie) while its opponent, the University of Michigan, had just five wins, three loses, and a tie. Yet the Michigan Wolverines managed to upset the Bears by 14 to 6. Cal would appear in only one more Rose Bowl, which it lost to Iowa in 1959.

Today is Streamliner Memories‘ fourth birthday, and following a tradition begun last year I am celebrating with the first of a series of Union Pacific’s color wrap-around photo menus. Today’s menu features the University of Washington on its cover and, being dated August, 1949, is the earliest example I’ve seen in UP’s university series. The photo features Condon Hall (since renamed Gowen Hall) and Savery Hall, which are described as “modern, clean-cut buildings.” Built in 1932, they are in fact gothic in style, though UP’s use of the word “modern” may not have referred to the architectural style. The 16,000 students mentioned on the cover have since grown to 45,000.
