All-Expense Dude Ranch Vacation

Here’s an offer I haven’t seen from any other railroad: ten days of food, lodging, and horseback riding at any of six different Montana dude ranches plus sleeping-car transportation from Chicago or Minneapolis-St. Paul (but not food on the train) all for one single price. Fares ranged from $175 (from the Twin Cities) to $230 (from Chicago) depending on the accommodation: the lowest were for two people per lower berth in a tourist sleeper while the highest was for one in a Pullman lower. Multiply prices by 10 to approximate today’s dollars.

1947 Empire Builder Lunch Menu

By 1949, Great Northern was using menus with Charlie Russell paintings on the cover for the streamlined Empire Builder. But when the train began operating in 1947, the menus were simpler, with a sketch of the train on the cover and an even cruder sketch of the train on page 3 (which also appeared on page 3 of the Charlie Russell menus).

This 1930 blotter advertises that the Empire Builder and Oriental Limited are “faster.” Although there was a general speed-up of major long-distance passenger trains at the end of the 1920s, one reason why these two trains in particular were faster was that the new Cascade Tunnel saved a lot of time in the Cascade Mountains. Going to the Sun Chalet Breakfast Menu

The picture on the cover of this menu was also used on a blotter and no doubt other advertising materials. It depicts the launch St. Mary near Going to the Sun Chalets, visible on the hillside. This was the first lodging constructed by Great Northern inside the park and was very successful until Going to the Sun Highway was built, after which people apparently didn’t see any need to stay overnight when they could just drive on.

The menu notes that “hot breads and pastries are baked on this car daily,” suggesting it was used on a premiere train such as the Oriental Limited before the Empire Builder was inaugurated.

From the Car Window

Although this along-the-way booklet is undated, it was published soon after the 1926 Columbia River Historical Expedition, as the centerfold map shows both a “modern map of the Northwest” and a “historic map of the Northwest.” These are the same maps shown in the Scenic Northwest advertising booklet from about 1931.

Two decades later, GN would publish a similarly titled booklet to go with the streamlined Empire Builder. Continue reading
