Resorts in the Canadian Rockies in 1930

The Chung collection has a Canadian Pacific booklet about resorts in the Canadian Rockies dated 1906. Between the Chung collection and archive.org are annual editions of the booklet from 1910 to 1933. From 1911 to 1923, these have a color painting on the cover and black-and-white photos inside.

The 1924 issue has color paintings on both front and back covers. The front cover painting is signed GFG, meaning Gordon Fraser Gillespie, who eventually worked full time for CP but in 1924 was working on commission. The back cover painting isn’t credited, but it was by an artist named Carl Rungius. From 1925 to 1931, color paintings by a variety of Canadian fine artists were featured on many of the interior pages as well.

Today’s booklet has five paintings: Mount Assiniboine by A.C. Leighton (which also appeared in the 1931 edition); Lakes in the Clouds by Donald Maxwell (which also appeared in the 1929 edition); the Banff golf course by Adam Sheriff Scott (which also appeared in the 1929 edition); Lake McArthur by Richard Kimbel (which also appeared in both the 1929 and 1931 editions); and Emerald Lake by Belmore Browne (which also appeared in both the 1929 and 1931 editions).

While CP seemed to repeat itself, it was actually somewhat eclectic. For example, the 1929 booklet had a painting of Mount Assiniboine, but it was by Carl Rungius instead of A.C. Leighton. It also used paintings of Lake Louise by both A.C. Leighton (1931) and Carl Rungius (in 1928). The 1928 edition had a painting of Emerald Lake, but it was by Hal Ross Perrigard instead of Belmore Browne. Apparently, the railway tried to keep a stable of artists happy.
