Banff Springs Hotel 1931 Booklet

A few days ago, I suggested that using the covers of its booklets and menus advertising its various hotels to publish a political statement claiming its moral superiority over rival Canadian National was poor marketing. Today’s booklet is an example of better marketing for those hotels.

The booklet is filled with eleven warm color illustrations and three etchings showing guests enjoying themselves at the hotel and surrounding area. One of the illustrations is signed “Palenske,” as is one of the etchings. This refers to Reinhold H. Palenske (1884-1953).

Palenske was born in Chicago and grew up hunting and horseback riding. After studying at the Art Institute of Chicago, he traveled the U.S. and Canadian West where, among other things, he helped found the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies. While he did many color illustrations for advertisements and calendars, for his fine art he preferred etchings and was considered one of the top etchers in the United States in 1945.

Canadian Pacific has glued a price sheet on the inside back cover that has rates for the 1932 season. Beneath this sheet, rates for the 1931 season are dimly visible. Thus, the booklet was published in 1931 but reused in 1932.
