Union Pacific June, 1953 Timetable

The appears to be the first Union Pacific timetable to have two streamliners on each cover picture. Yesterday’s timetable, which was issued three months before this one, had a streamliner and a steam-powered train that was presumably a heavyweight. That design was apparently first used in 1947.

The back of this timetable offered a free motor coach trip to Hoover Dam “for Union Pacific passengers traveling to or from Southern California.” To be eligible for the free trip, passengers had to travel via Union Pacific between Omaha, Kansas City, or Huntington, Oregon and Daggett (the eastern-most stop for most UP trains in southern California) or beyond. For all other passengers, the tour was $2.50 (nearly $26 in today’s money).

Timetable 10 on page 31 says that the tour left Las Vegas at 9:30 am and allowed passengers 85 minutes at Hoover Dam before returning at 2:30 pm. The westbound City of Los Angeles and Los Angeles Limited passed through Las Vegas in the wee hours of the night, but the Idahoan arrived at 7:20 in the morning, which would have been convenient for the free bus tour. After the tour, passengers who didn’t want to spend the night in Vegas (which was nowhere near as interesting in 1953 as it is today) could take the Pony Express to Los Angeles, leaving at 8:35 pm. The Idahoan connected with the Los Angeles Limited in Omaha, so passengers from Chicago could take advantage of this offer.

The eastbound City of Los Angeles and Los Angeles Limited arrived in Vegas in the evening, forcing people who wanted a free to to spend the night in Vegas, which, while not terrible, wouldn’t have been free. But passengers could arrive on the Pony Express at 5:30 am, take the free tour, then depart on the Idahoan at 6:30 pm, the Los Angeles Limited at 7:55 pm, or the City of Los Angeles at 11:55 pm.

In short, it was possible to take advantage of this free tour without spending any additional money (except for meals) and by adding as little as one day to a trip. Of course, many people stayed over in Vegas anyway for the gambling and/or floor shows, which were anything but free, but they might take advantage of this offer while there.

The back-cover ad also notes that “an interesting guided tour through gigantic Hoover Dam is available to all visitors for only 35 cents” or about $3.60 in today’s money. Today, self-guided tours are $10 and 30-minute guided tours start at $15 while 60-minute guided tours are $30, so it appears people could have fit the 35-cent tours into the 85 minutes allowed by the bus schedule.

  1. I would imagine that back in 1953 you could still find cheap buffets and specials like a $1.99 prime rib. You might find that sort of thing at the smaller hotels off The Strip, but they’re disappearing fast if, in fact, they’re not already extinct.
