The Tonquin Valley holds Lake Amethyst surrounded by spectacular mountains, but it was probably seen by few Jasper Lodge visitors in 1951 because it required a hike of at least seven miles each way, not counting the miles of hiking to explore the valley once people got there. There are some backcountry lodges in the valley, at least one of which offers horseback trips from the trail heads, but the thought of all day on horseback probably also discouraged many people.

My last menu in this 1951 series shows the Narrows at Maligne Lake. This is a different photo from the one used on the 1940 menu. As I noted then, this view was popularized when Kodak put a giant photo of this scene up in New York’s Grand Central Terminal in 1960. It has since become one of the most photographed scenes in Canada.

Maligne Lake is almost 30 miles away from Jasper Lodge, but at least it is reachable by automobile so it was probably visited by a lot more lodge guests than visited Tonquin Valley. This menu is dated August 5, so we’ve seen it before.
