The painting on Santa Fe’s 1979 calendar is by Claudine Morrow, one of the younger painters from whom Santa Fe purchased artworks. She was born in Kansas in 1931 and, as near as I can tell, is currently living in Page, Arizona. Her paintings tend to feature northern Arizona Indians.

One or more of the characters in most of her paintings is looking at the viewer, as if she originally took photographs and painted from the photos. This breaking of the “fourth wall” bugs me, as it makes it look more like she is trying to sell us something than educate us about life on the reservations. Morrow also did this “lost lamb” painting, and while the subject isn’t looking at the viewer, the subject matter is still designed to give us a “d’aww” feeling, which I feel places it more in the category of commercial art than fine art.
