Rails Through the Rockies

This is a rare dining car menu that features a freight train on the cover. Though the photograph shows a “striking vista” (as noted on the back cover), “with stately Mt. Sopris dominating a scene of Autumnal beauty,” that beauty is a bit marred by the coal smoke pouring out of the steam locomotives in the distance.

Inside, the 1948 breakfast menu offers a choice of thirteen cereals, fifteen fruits and juices, and a variety of entrées including, as always, trout. Full meals offer eight entrées accompanied by fruit, cereal, bread, and beverage. Meal prices range from $1.00 (about $10.50 today) to $1.35 (about $14 today) or just $0.90 for fruit, cereal, bread, and beverage without the entrées.
