The 1982 calendar has four photos of freight trains. Although the January photo shown below is shot into the sun, the other three are more conventional. In all, there are two photos each from Oregon, Utah, and Wyoming, and one each from Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, Nevada, and Washington. Curiously, none are from California even though that state’s population was almost as great as all of the other states then served by the UP combined.

None of the photos are truly spectacular, but several are very nice. A rainforest on the Olympic Peninsula is nicely lit. A photo of the Moran River with flowers in the foreground shows admirable restraint in leaving the Teton Mountains out of the frame, which would have made it trite after so many similar photos in pre-1971 calendars. Finally, the December photo of a ramshackle fence in Utah is a little bit reminiscent of a similar photo in the 1980 calendar but still worth a look.
