Heart of the Rockies

This is one of many picture books published by various companies to be sold on board Denver & Rio Grande trains (and presumably in D&RG stations as well). This one happens to be dated 1906 (before the D&RG became the D&RGW) and was printed by the Williamson-Haffner Engraving Company and sold by the Van Noy News Company, the latter of which also offered eating houses similar to Fred Harvey’s before railroads had dining cars.

This booklet has one painting and 24 colorized photos (including the cover photo) that are slightly smaller than 6″x8″. Each photo is printed on white paper, then glued onto a sheet of heavy black construction paper. The booklet itself is about 9-2/3″x12″, so there is a large black border around each photo. The end papers of the booklet give brief descriptions of all of the photos. It’s a little surprising that the publisher would pick a photo in portrait mode for the cover, requiring potential buyers to turn the booklet 90 degrees to be able to see it.
