This 12-page booklet provides a city-by-city description of the Portland-San Francisco route used by Southern Pacific trains in 1950. By this time, all trains went on the West Side line through the Sacramento Valley (meaning they skipped Sacramento itself).

Published just a year-and-a-half after yesterday’s general timetable, this one shows some significant changes in the Shasta Route service. First, for 1938 SP increased the service between Portland and San Francisco over the Cascade line from three to four trains a day, with a train called the Oregonian joining the Cascade, Klamath, and West Coast. The latter train took SP’s East Side Sacramento Valley line through Marysville and Sacramento, while the other three took the West Side line to Davis, skipping Sacramento.

The Siskiyou line, however, had been downgraded, with no through trains between Portland and San Francisco. Instead, the Shasta only went overnight between Grants Pass and San Francisco, with a Pacific Greyhound connecting bus from Grants Pass to Eugene. An overnight train, now named the Rogue River, continued to go between Portland and Ashland, resulting in there still being two trains a day for Rogue Valley residents between Grants Pass and Ashland.

Southern Pacific Desk Map

Like many railroad maps, the map is on one side while the other side advertises the railroad’s trains. This 1938 map advertises the railroad’s Four Great Routes, but also maps and pictures steamships from New Orleans to New York as well as between Houston and Baltimore, New York, and Boston.

Another photograph shows a train on a high bridge on the West Coast of Mexico route, also known as the Sud Pacifico de Mexico. This is a 1930 eight-panel brochure (printed both sides) that has ten black-and-white photos of the northern California coast plus a brilliant color cover painting by Maurice Logan. Southern Pacific used a portion of this same painting on a matching poster advertising the Redwood Empire Tour, but the portion of trees shown on the brochure are higher.

The Arizona Limited

The Arizona Limited was a kind of semi-train: semi-streamlined, semi-daily, operated only half the year (actually just three-and-one-half months), and by two railroads using two train sets for only two years. Each Pullman-only train set consisted of a heavyweight Rock Island baggage car, a heavyweight Rock Island diner, two streamlined sleepers with two drawing rooms, four compartments, and four double bedrooms, two streamlined sleepers with five double bedrooms and ten roomettes, and an observation car with one drawing room, one compartment, and two double bedrooms.

The train was a 1940 attempt to turn Phoenix into a winter vacation destination. On its 1,124-mile segment of the trip, Rock Island powered the train with Diesels, while SP used semi-streamlined steam locomotives for its 803 miles. Maurice Logan Postcards

We’ve seen Maurice Logan’s paintings for the Southern Pacific in the form of posters. SP also issued some postcards with his paintings that are good examples of Logan’s impressionistic style of illustrating. The first shows “Lake Apache on the Apache Trail highway, Arizona, Reached by Southern Pacific.”

Oakland Mole

Southern Pacific had a line entering San Francisco from the south, but trains from Portland and Ogden terminated at Oakland. While passengers to Oakland and other East Bay communities got off at Oakland’s 16th Street Station, until 1958, passengers to San Francisco took one of Southern Pacific’s ferries from Oakland Pier to the City. The pier was also known as the Oakland Mole, a mole being a “large mass” that was used as a breakwater or pier. (The word has the same root as molecule, which literally means a “tiny mass”).

The above postcard shows the terminal from the ferry end with passengers either waiting to board the ferry or to meet people getting of the ferry. Unfortunately, the postcard is rather dark and dreary–probably like the terminal itself–so the publisher, Pacific Novelty Company, reissued it after substituting light blue for all of the black in the original photo. The revised version (below) certainly is cheerier, but probably not very realistic. That didn’t stop whoever wrote this postcard in 1922 from “having a wild time in Frisco.”
