It’s Christmas season, and if you had been in Sun Valley sixty years ago, you might have been invited to sing Christmas carols out of one of these booklets. The inside front cover says, “Wishing You A Merry Christmas/May Good Health and Happiness/Be With You/Throughout the New Year, Compliments of Union Pacific Railroad.”

Other than the beautiful front cover photo and inside front cover greeting, there is absolutely nothing in this booklet to connect it with the Union Pacific Railroad. The first page with a Christmas carol says the booklet was published by Garrison House, a calendar maker of that era. The inside back cover has the words to Clement Moore’s Night Before Christmas. The booklets were obviously published to Union Pacific’s order by Garrison House, and no doubt other companies issued similar booklets with different covers. Continue reading →

1942 Overland Limited Menu

We’ve previously seen this menu cover on an example taken from the collection of the New York Public Library. The cover of that one also noted that it was for “Southern Pacific Service.” This one doesn’t say whether it is for Union Pacific or Southern Pacific (or C&NW) service, but I suspect it was UP.

1939 Columbine Menu

This beautiful menu seems to have been printed in at least four colors–blue, green, purple, and yellow–which were also combined to print a fairly realistic-looking color photo on the back cover. The inside pages were printed in just green and purple. CYMK four-color printing had been invented in 1906, but it wasn’t until the late 1930s that it was heavily used by railroads (such as in this 1936 Canadian Pacific booklet), probably resulting from the introduction of Kodachrome photography in 1935.

Union Pacific was slow to take advantage of CYMK printing, instead issuing this menu as part of what I now realize was a special series of non-photo menus for each of Union Pacific’s premiere trains in the late 1930s. Menu covers for the streamliners had the Winged Streamliner logo and the words “The Streamliner City of . . .” in art deco lettering. In addition to columbine for the Columbine, menu covers for the premiere heavyweight trains had roses for the Portland Rose, California poppies for the Los Angeles Limited, what appears to be a Southern Pacific steam locomotive for the Overland Limited, and a horse and rider for the Pony Express. Since these menus were only used on premiere trains, leaving the Black-and-White photo series for other trains, I’m going to call these the Premiere series on my UP menu checklist. 1935 Multnomah Falls Menu

This Union Pacific menu is from what I’ve been calling the Modern series but really should be called the Moderne series. This series of menus, of which I’ve documented just five, used the same photos and text of the Art Nouveau series that preceded it but with a much cleaner overall design. For example, this one uses the same front and back photos and back text as this 1928 menu.

UP 1934 Old Faithful Lunch Menu

This Art Nouveau menu offers “luncheon” on the Los Angeles Limited, Union Pacific’s then-premiere train. The left side of the menu is a la carte, while the right side lists beverages. This is similar to other Los Angeles Limited dinner menus, but I suspect a table d’hôte menu was printed on light paper and glued or clipped into the menu.

The cover photo is attributed to Haynes, which–according to the Park Service–means Frank J. Haynes rather than his son, Jack Ellis Haynes, who took over the photography business when Frank retired in 1916. The Park Service also dates this photo to 1920, but that is unlikely as the photo was clearly used as the source of the cover art on this 1916 publication. The original black-and-white photo was probably taken around 1910, but even that is just an guesstimate. Continue reading →

1934 Orange Groves Breakfast Menu

Since 2014, I’ve had a tradition of posting new Union Pacific menus beginning around August 1. Last August, I lamented that I had been able to acquire only five new menus in the previous year. Since then, I’ve found nine new ones (plus two previously shown). I’m not certain my collection has enough items to keep up daily postings until next August, so I will post these menus between now and the end of the year.

The rather dark photograph on the cover of this menu shows the same scene as the orange groves photo used on UP’s post-war menus with the unfortunate foreground addition of a palm tree, just in case anyone didn’t catch that oranges only grow in warm climates. The outside cover was printed in June, 1934, but the menu inside was printed in October. The back cover has a photo of Avalon Bay on Catalina Island. Continue reading →

We’ve seen menus similar to this one before with aqua coloring for the cover illustration. This one has the same illustration but uses a deep blue coloring in honor of the recently adopted Big Sky Blue paint scheme. This 1962 brochure presents four panels and four photos of people fishing and five panels (including the cover) and seven photos of people hiking or horseback riding in the park. One of the hiking photos shows a couple eating their “tasty box lunches, packed by a park hotel.” Where the other two tiny brochures for Glacier include a tiny map of the park that fills part of one panel, this one has a large, two-panel map that shows major trails; this same map was later used in this full-sized Glacier Park brochure.
