Views of the Shasta Route

Some time after 1948 — I’m guessing around 1950 — a company called Alex Dulfer Lithographing issued a new set of 16 color photos of the Shasta Route. Like the National Color Press set, these would have been sold in train stations and on board Southern Pacific trains. Unlike the National Color Press set, the colors in these photos appear much more realistic.

Also unlike my version of the National Color Press edition, this one includes an actual photo of a train, which of course is the Shasta Daylight by Odell Lake, perhaps Southern Pacific’s favorite spot to photograph the train. Scenic Views Along the Coast & Valley Routes

After discarding all of the photographs that are duplicates of ones in other sets in this series, this packet has even fewer unique photos than the Overland Route folio. Just two photos, one of Hollywood Boulevard and one of “the world’s largest motion picture studio,” aren’t found in any of the other photo sets. My guess is the movie studio is Warner Brothers, but it could also be Fox, MGM, or Paramount.

Scenic Views on the Overland Route

If you already had the other folios of scenes along the Southern Pacific — the Shasta Route, California, San Francisco, and Grandeur of the West — you might be disappointed to learn that thirteen of the sixteen photos in the Overland Route packet are found in one or more of the others. The only unique photos show the Mormon Temple (mislabeled the Mormon Tabernacle), Palisade Canyon in Nevada, and Reno.

The most popular photo appears to be of the Golden Gate Bridge. Nearly the same photo is in all of the packets, though two of them show the same scene as the other four taken from a slightly different angle probably just a few moments apart. For the record, the California folder has four unique photos; the West has five; the Shasta has nine; and the San Francisco folder has eleven (one of which, showing a Golden Gate Park windmill, is missing from my set but is shown below). Scenic Views on the Shasta Route

This packet of sixteen color photos is similar to photo sets we’ve seen before of San Francisco, California, and the West. There was also one for the Overland Route which I’ll post tomorrow and one for the California Coast and Valley routes which I’ll post the day after that. All of the ones published in 1948 or before were issued for Southern Pacific by a San Francisco company called National Color Press and sold in stations and on board SP trains.

Although the cover has a drawing of a streamlined train, this packet was issued in 1948, the year before Southern Pacific inaugurated its streamlined Shasta Daylight. A few of the photos show SP tracks or were taken from very close to the tracks, but none show actual trains, probably because SP didn’t want to feature obsolete equipment. Continue reading →

SP’s 1938 brochure for the budget-priced Californian was printed in black-and-white with red trim. For 1940, SP issued an all-new brochure printed in “natural color,” meaning Kodachrome photographs printed with the CYMK four-color process. 1935 Overland Limited Lunch Menu

The San Francisco Overland Limited was one of Southern Pacific’s premiere trains. Yet this lunch menu is little more than an ordinary sheet of paper, slightly larger than 8-1/2″-by-11″, folded in thirds like a brochure. The menu is undated, but a black-and-white photo shows a track meet that a caption identifies as the West Coast Relays, the ninth annual session of which “will gather at Fresno May 11.” Since the relays started in 1927, that dates the menu to 1935.

Despite the cheapness of the menu paper, the menu itself is quite appealing. A table d’hôte panel offers seven entrées: striped bass, fresh vegetables, lamb casserole, veal cutlets, minced chicken & ham, club steak, and tenderloin tips, all with soup, vegetables, potatoes, salad, bread, dessert, and beverage. The a la carte panel lists two kinds of fish, five hot and five cold meats, and a much wider variety of vegetables, soups, salads, breads, desserts, and beverages than would be found on post-war dining car menus. A third panel lists beverages and things like playing cards, tobacco, and a Southern Pacific recipe book.

Published in 1925, this booklet highlights all of California’s major attractions reached by SP: San Francisco before the Golden Gate Bridge; Monterey; Los Angeles; Carriso Gorge; San Diego; and Yosemite. Painters were attracted to New Mexico by the purity of the colors: red rocks, blue skies, green trees. That shows here in this painting, along with the red of chilis hanging out to dry. The painting for this calendar — which, for some reason, does not have December, 1985 on the pad — was done by Sheldon Orrin Parsons.

Santa Fe continued to issue calendars featuring its western art for more than two decades after Amtrak took over passenger service.
