Sun Valley Horse Riders Menu

Like the Duchess of Idaho menu shown here a few days ago, this is a menu we’ve seen before but one that wasn’t actually in my collection. Now that I’ve acquired one, there are only two UP photo menus I know about that I still don’t have: one showing the University of Idaho at Caldwell and the other looking straight at a Cable Car on Nob Hill.

City of San Francisco Brochure

We’ve previously seen a four-color brochure advertising the City of San Francisco dated November, 1955, or right after UP transferred its passenger trains from Chicago & North Western to Milwaukee Road. This one is dated August, 1955, and the only differences are the cover photos and the listing of Chicago & North Western rather than Milwaukee Road.

Zion, Grand, & Bryce Lodge Menus

I mentioned a few days ago that I sometimes acquire menus whose covers I already have either because they came with other menus or by mistake. I purchased these three by mistake thinking I didn’t have one of them when it turned out I did. But they still proved to be interesting as they were used in UP’s southern Utah park lodges.

Even more interesting, all three menus are postmarked even though there is no mailing address. The above menu even has a 2¢ postage stamp that a close look reveals has almost exactly the same view of the Grand Canyon as is on the menu. Continue reading →

1955 Small Colorado Brochure

This appears to be a companion to yesterday’s brochure about the City of Denver, but supposedly focusing on what to do when people got to Denver. In the mid-1950s, Union Pacific published a series of 8-1/2″x11″ full-color glossy four-page brochures about places including Colorado, but this is a much abbreviated alternative to those brochures.

We’ve previously seen a glossy, four-color brochure advertising the City of Denver dated October, 1955. Here’s a much more modest brochure for the same train dated June, 1955.

Today’s brochure has three black-and-white photos of the same interiors as some of the color photos in the glossy version. However, the photos weren’t taken at the same time. The black-and-white photo of the City of Denver‘s diner shows tables for four on both sides of the aisle (typical for summers), while the color photo shows tables for two on one side (typical for winters). The black-and-white photo of the Pub car shows a waiter wearing white coat and pants while the waiter in the color photo has a red coat and black pants.

Union Pacific Challenger Menus

Union Pacific’s budget train and competitor to the El Capitan, the Challenger began operating with heavyweight equipment in 1935 and was discontinued in 1947. In 1954, UP had acquired enough streamlined passenger cars to revive the train, and in 1955 it became a domeliner. Instead of fancy menu folders, passengers ordered meals from these menus that doubled as postcards that could be mailed to friends and relatives.

This menu, which is not in my collection, has “CNW” in the lower right-hand corner while the back has “Chicago & North Western System” printed in a different color below “Union Pacific Railroad Company.” Handwriting on the back okay’s this menu on November 3, 1954. In 1954, the westbound Challenger left Chicago at 9 am and arrived in Omaha at 5 pm while the eastbound train left Omaha at 11:45 pm and arrived in Chicago at 7:45 am. The C&NW must have offered breakfast for early risers on the Chicago-bound train. Continue reading →

This timetable, which was contributed by the same reader as yesterday’s, immediately follows yesterday’s, so we shouldn’t expect too many differences. Yet there are a few.

UP added a half hour to the City of Los Angeles schedule in both directions, thus losing the sub-40-hour schedule that made the train competitive with the Santa Fe Super Chief. According to my 1958 Santa Fe timetable, the Super Chief still did this route in under 40 hours. Time was also added to the City of San Francisco schedule, but not the City of Portland, which was already more than 40 hours in 1954. Continue reading →

Union Pacific September 1954 Timetable

Scans of this timetable were contributed by a Streamliner Memories reader to fill in the gap between the 1951 timetable and the one for 1958. In 1951, UP still had enough steam locomotives to put one on its timetable cover, which on this one was replaced by the observation car of a passenger train.

The big change on the inside is that the Los Angeles Limited, once Union Pacific’s premiere heavyweight train, has been dropped and the streamlined Challenger added. Sun Valley Delta Gamma Menus

The Delta Gamma sorority held its annual convention in Sun Valley in 1954 and were served meals from these menus. These are similar to the postcard menus we’ve seen before, but where the others are about 9-1/2″ tall, these are more than 11″ tall. They are all about 5-1/2″ wide, of course, as that’s the standard width of a postcard.
