Cold Dishes for Hot Days

We’ve seen a die-cut image of an apple used by the Northern Pacific as a breakfast menu. This one isn’t die-cut, but the words “Just a Bite for Lunch” on the front and the NP logo on the back are embossed into the paper.

Eastward Through the Storied Northwest

This 1909 booklet was apparently written to entice eastern visitors to the San Diego and San Francisco fairs that celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal to make their return trips via the Northern Pacific rather than the more direct Overland, Santa Fe, or Golden State routes. The 40 or so pages of text are attributed to geographer Olin Wheeler, who also wrote Northern Pacific’s Wonderland series of travel booklets.

Wheeler describes a journey beginning in San Diego up the coastline to the Bay Area then up the Shasta Route over Siskiyou Pass. As such, the first 17 pages focus on Southern Pacific lines, not Northern Pacific. Northern Pacific was always a little closer to the Southern Pacific than was the Great Northern, which built its own line into California while NP exchanged freight with SP at Portland. (In my fantasy world, NP merged with SP, GN with Santa Fe, and UP with Milwaukee Road to create three great western railroads instead of the two we have today.) Continue reading

Northern Pacific 1908 Supper Menu

The front cover of this menu just has NP logos, but the back cover has several black-and-white photos of Yellowstone National Park. Inside, an a la carte menu labeled “Supper” is on the left side while right side is a wine and beverage list. Thanks to Streamliner Memories reader Laurie Powers for scans of this menu.

Great Northern Beverage Menu

Copies of this beverage menu were used in the lounge cars of both the Empire Builder and Western Star in 1964. The menu offers a few wines, bourbons, whiskeys, and numerous mixed drinks. Playing cards were 80 cents (about $6.50 today) a deck, $1.60 for a pair of decks. The menu also advertised GN souvenir travel bags for $1.50 (about $12.50 today). These bags are collector’s items today but were so cheaply made they really weren’t good for travel.

1916 Grinnell Glacier Menu

It looks like someone did a lot of careful hand stitching to make the cover of this menu framing a postcard and the Great Northern logo with another postcard on the back. The stitching appears too imperfect to be a mere illustration, although similar stitching on the inside does look a bit more artificial. The postcards are replicas of real postcards, but the one on the front is a bit larger and the one in the back is much smaller than standard postcard size.

An insert accompanying the menu advertises “Table d’hôte Luncheon and Dinner for 75 cents.” Another insert is dated June 21st and is printed on a form dated 2-11-16. It also says it was used on dining car 7108 on train 357. That was a train that left Seattle at 10 am and arrived in Portland at 4:40 pm, so this was used for lunch, not dinner, service. More GN Indian Postcards

Here are five more postcards from around 1913 contributed by a Streamliner Memories reader. These aren’t quite as offensive as yesterday’s. The first one even makes the chief appear able to read English, which wasn’t true for most Indian elders at that time.

Great Northern Indian Postcards

A Streamliner Memories reader sent scans of these postcards. Most are undated but the first one is postmarked October 23, 1913 in Malta, Montana. A message to the recipient in Chicago says it was written “on board the Oriental Limited.”

The person who sent the postcards noted that they would be considered politically incorrect today. While I think the political correctness movement often goes too far, I have to say I find many of these cards offensive as they portray Indians as foolish, ignorant, and even cowardly. City of Miami Breakfast Menu

In the last few days I’ve shown a City of Miami dinner menu with a plantation manor on the cover; a lunch menu with a Chicago waterfront image on the cover; and now a breakfast menu with a Florida beach on the cover. As far as I can tell, IC consistently used the beach scene for breakfast, the Chicago scene for lunch, and the monor for dinner.

This 1970 menu is typical for breakfast, with egg dishes, griddle cakes, and “famous Illinois Central style French toast.” What made railroad French toast special was that it was baked in the oven after being fried on a griddle. That was probably an expedient rather than a culinary choice as it allowed the chefs to have French toast available on short notice, but it certainly pleased the diners.

In 1963, the Florida East Coast Railroad, which was just emerging from bankruptcy, decided to buck the union work rules that had been accepted by the rest of the railroad industry. This allowed the railroad to operate much more efficiently, but it also meant that it couldn’t accept passenger trains from other railroads because the union workers on those other railroads would refuse to work on a train that operated on FEC.
