U.S. Map and Vacation Guide

“There’s no vacation like a western vacation,” proclaims the vacation guide side of this brochure. It includes a few paragraphs and two or three black-and-white photos on each of the major tourist destinations accessed by Burlington trains: Colorado Rockies, Yellowstone, Glacier, the Pacific Northwest, California, the Black Hills, and dude ranches.

The map side of the brochure has a Poole Brothers map dated 1938, but the brochure itself is dated November 1, 1950. The cover, featuring a steam locomotive and a shovel-nosed Zephyr, seems a bit dated for 1950. Burlington’s 1950 timetables had a shovel-nosed Zephyr on the cover, but the other half of the cover had an E-5 Diesel locomotive.

This plus the map date suggests this was an older brochure that had received minor updates for its 1950 printing. Certainly Burlington continued to publish a similar brochure through the 1950s, though E-5 locomotives soon replaced by the Zephyr and the steamer.
