Steam Still Stands Supreme

As noted here a couple of days ago, in 1929 Canadian Pacific acquired twenty 2-10-4 locomotives, which it called Selkirks, from Montreal Locomotive Works, the Canadian subsidiary of the American Locomotive Company (ALCO). At 78,000 pounds of tractive effort, these were at the time the most powerful locomotives in Canada.

In 1931, Canadian Pacific followed the Selkirks by building its own 2-10-4 locomotive, numbered 8000. But this used an experimental design known as the Schmidt high-pressure system.

This system started with a closed-circuit, high-pressure boiler operating at 1,350 pounds per square inch. The steam produced by this boiler transferred its heat to a second boiler that operated at 850 pounds per square inch. This was used to power a third cylinder hidden under the front of the locomotive. The exhaust steam from the third cylinder was added to steam from a third conventional boiler to power the two conventionally located cylinders operating at 250 pounds per square inch. The result was a locomotive that developed, according to this menu, 83,200 pounds of tractive effort.

Only four other Schmidt locomotives were ever built, one in England, two in Germany (one of which was used in France), and one by Alco for the New York Central. The CP model was the largest of these by far. Schmidt locomotives were not only more powerful, they reportedly saved as much as 40 percent on fuel. But because they were complex and hard to maintain, none lasted very long. After spending a third of its operating life in the shops, 8000 was last used at the end of 1936 and scrapped in 1940. The extra complexity was not worth the 7 percent increase in power.

This menu is undated but the inside is decorated with green holly leaves and red berries with the words “Seasons Greetings.” So it is reasonable to conclude that the menus was issued in November or December 1931. The menu cover painting is signed something like “RCLE,” but I can’t identify what artist this represents.
