The Land of Perfect Desire

This booklet says that California can be “reached quickly and with all the comforts of travel by the Chicago, Union Pacific & North Western Line,” which was the name of the tour company owned by the two railroads. The booklet naturally focuses on San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego, with a brief description of Yosemite and Sequoia national parks.

The booklet itself has no date, but one of the maps is dated “12-3-17.” The United States Railroad Administration took over the railroads on December 28, 1917, and it probably would not have approved this booklet as being frivolous during wartime, so the booklet must have been issued almost immediately after the date on the map.

The booklet commits what to me is the cardinal sin of leaving an entire page nearly blank. The inside front and back covers are both blank, which might be a stylistic decision, but the page before the inside back cover is also blank except for “Poole Bros. Chicago” in tiny print. Since they paid for the printing on this page anyway, they might as well have added a photo or two.
