This guide covers the route from Chicago to Seattle with brief descriptions of cities and sites along the way as well as lots of small, black-and-white photos. The booklet is undated, but the centerfold map is dated December, 1952. Such maps usually have slightly earlier dates than the publications they appear in. This, plus the super dome on the cover, leads me to date it to 1953.

The Milwaukee Road added superdomes to the Olympian Hiawatha on January 1, 1953. We’ve previously seen a December, 1952 booklet about those domes. This June, 1953 booklet modifies yesterday’s booklet by adding information about the domes.

1950 Olympian Hiawatha Booklet

The Milwaukee Road inaugurated the Olympian Hiawatha in 1947, but didn’t fully streamline it until 1949. I’ve previously shown a 1947 booklet advertising the train. This one is very different, both in format (portrait rather than landscape) and colors (the 1947 one had color on every page while this one is mostly black-and-white with a little magenta trim).

A friend of Streamliner Memories provided scans of this timetable, which is in poor shape but still very readable. It is missing a page which was a fold-out map that was torn out. Otherwise, all of the timetables should be there.

The 1910 was a heady time for the Milwaukee, which had just finished building its Pacific extension from Mobridge, South Dakota to Seattle in 1909, making it the only railroad whose line went all the way from Chicago to the Northwest. The first Milwaukee passenger trains to Seattle started service in July, 1910, and a timetable for the as-yet-unnamed train is shown on panels 73 through 76 (physical pages 36 and 37). In what was probably the next timetable after this one–May, 1911–the railroad inaugurated both the Olympian and Columbian on this route.

Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Postcards

The Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad went bankrupt in 1925, and emerged as the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific in 1928. It’s nickname changed as well: before 1925, it was known as the St. Paul Road; after 1928, it was called the Milwaukee Road. (Similarly, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad was known as “the Atchison” before going bankrupt after the panic of 1893 and emerged as the AT&SF Railway or Santa Fe for short.)

1953 Utah Parks Lodge Menus

Here are a couple of postcard menus from Union Pacific’s lodges in Bryce and Grand Canyon national parks. Guests were welcome to tear off the postcard and mail it to their friends. Fortunately, whoever collected these menus didn’t do that.

The first one has a photo of Bryce Canyon, but was used in Grand Canyon Lodge. A blurb on the back encourages tourists to take a bus trip into Bryce. 1953 Bear Lake Dinner Menu

Two months ago, I listed this as a missing menu, but I recently acquired a copy and decided to post it now before leaving Union Pacific items. With the UP-MP-WP merger approved, UP issued this map in 1983. It might be hard to tell from the PDF, but the cover and the map are printed on two different pieces of paper and glued together.

Missouri Pacific was a good fit with Union Pacific. Western Pacific would also have been a good fit except for the fact that Union Pacific later took over the merged Southern Pacific-Rio Grande railroads, thus giving UP the only two lines between Salt Lake City and Oakland to the west and Denver to the east.
